Why I Stepped Away — And Why I’m So Excited to Be Back

If you’ve followed my photography for a while, you may have noticed that things became pretty quiet around here at the end of October.

It wasn’t because I stopped loving photography.

Life simply asked me to put my camera down for a little while.

During my pregnancy, I was placed on bed rest, and photography had to take a back seat while I focused on keeping myself and my baby safe. I expected that season to be temporary and thought I would return to work fairly quickly after he was born.

But when our baby Ross arrived, our world changed in ways we never could have anticipated.

He was born with significant medical challenges, and suddenly our days were filled with doctors, hospitals, appointments, procedures, and a lot of uncertainty. Photography became the last thing on my mind.

For that season, I needed to be exactly where I was — with my family.

Sometimes Life Changes the Plan

Taking an entire year away from a business I had poured so much of myself into wasn’t something I had planned.

But it gave me something I didn’t expect: perspective.

When life becomes uncertain, the little moments suddenly don’t feel little anymore.

A hand wrapped around your finger.

A sibling making the baby laugh.

Everyone sitting together on an ordinary afternoon.

The people you love simply being there.

Those moments are exactly why I picked up a camera in the first place.

And after everything our family experienced, I think I understand their value even more now.

A Year Later

Today, I’m incredibly grateful to say that Ross is doing well, our family has found its rhythm again, and I finally feel ready to step back into something I’ve missed so much.

Photography.

I’m coming back after a year away with a healthy baby, a very full heart, and a renewed appreciation for what photographs eventually become.

They aren’t just pretty pictures.

They’re proof of a season of your life.

They’re the people you love exactly as they were.

They’re the moments you may not realize are important until years later.

And I cannot wait to start preserving those moments for my couples again.
